When to visit South Africa: a month-by-month guide

South Africa is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on where you're going. Two things to remember:

  • Seasons are reversed from Europe and North America. December is midsummer; July is midwinter.
  • The Cape and the north peak at different times. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate (dry summers, winter rain from June to August). Kruger, Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal have summer rainfall (roughly November to March) and dry, sunny winters, which are peak game-viewing season from May to September.

Month by month

January. High summer. Cape Town is hot, dry and busy; book early. Kruger is green and lush with baby animals, but hot, with afternoon storms.

February. Arguably Cape Town's best month: warm sea, settled weather, and the Winelands harvest begins. Good value on safari.

March. Harvest season in the Winelands, warm days at the Cape, and the end of the summer rains in the north.

April. Autumn colours in the Winelands. The bush starts to dry out. A great all-round shoulder month, but watch for Easter holidays.

May. Crisp, clear days in Kruger as game viewing improves. Cape Town is quieter and good value, with occasional rain.

June. Winter. Peak safari conditions begin. Whale season starts on the Cape coast. Cape Town sees rain fronts between brilliant blue days.

July. Excellent safari month: dry, cool and great for sightings. Cape Town is green and cosy; whales in Hermanus. Mid-year school holidays bring families.

August. Still peak safari. Whales are plentiful. West Coast wildflowers begin to bloom north of Cape Town.

September. One of our favourite months anywhere in the country: spring at the Cape, prime whale watching and superb game viewing.

October. Peak whale season continues, Cape Town warms up and the bush is at its driest, so animals gather at water.

November. The first rains arrive in the north, bringing impala lambs and migrant birds. Lovely early summer at the Cape.

December. Festive season: South Africans head to the coast, and prices and demand peak. Book well ahead.

The short answer

For a classic Cape Town and safari combination, September to November and March to May balance good weather at the Cape with strong game viewing. Want summer at the beach? Go December to February and enjoy a lush, green safari. Prefer the very best wildlife? June to September, and pack a warm jacket for early drives.
